Throughout its history, in every land where it is published, Freedom has supported freedom of information. In the United States, it has been a tireless champion of that nation’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and pioneered its use in public service journalism.

While consistently utilising the FOIA for its own investigations, Freedom has also shared its acquired expertise by publishing guides to promote the use of freedom of information laws. Broadly distributed as a public service to tens of thousands of individuals and groups, How to Use the Freedom of Information Act caused a resurgence in FOIA utilisation in the United States following release of its two editions in 1979 and 1989.

Then, to facilitate understanding of French open government law and how to gain access to administrative documents, the Éthique et Liberté association followed suit in 2003, publishing a 112-page brochure that is freely distributed to any individual or legal entity that has the need or desire to use this law. In this way, the Freedom family of publications contributes to a more informed citizenry by advocating use of laws on free public access to government information.
